Zellers today announced it will close most of its remaining store locations across Canada including the location at Tecumseh Mall in East Windsor and the Leamington Location.
These two stores and the leases of 62 others across the country were not part of the acquisition agreement with Target Corp. in 2011 to purchase 189 Zellers leaseholds.
Zellers says that after a lengthy review and numerous discussions with various parties it became apparent to them that continuing to operate the Zellers banner in its current form was not viable, particularly given the geographic footprint of the remaining locations, so they have decided not to operate most of its remaining stores beyond March 2013. The Tecumseh Mall Zellers restaurant will be closing on December 15th.
Zellers is considering options for certain locations, including potentially rebranding some stores, which will result in certain stores remaining open for the foreseeable future. This will be determined at a later date.
The location at Devonshiore Mall is set to become a Target Store in 2013 and a liquidation is currently underway. The Huron Church location closed in June, and construction is under way to convert the location into a grocery store.
