Last night there was a small band in a small bar with a big sound.

The Standstills from Oshawa visited The Dugout (300 Ouellette Avenue) in support of their new release, a 7” vinyl entitled “The Barn Sessions” which was released on December 22^nd through Get Bent Records.

Their last visit here was in early October as part of the Harvesting the F.A.M. Fest when they played with The Blue Stones.

Since then it seems their name has spread, as the tiny bar was packed with an eclectic crowd, all of them seemingly very into the music. When trying to end their set, chants of “One more song!…Two more songs!” filled the room.

The Standstills themselves are a two-piece rock group with a vintage-meets-modern sound. Jonny Fox is a solid vocalist who was able to keep up his strong and dynamic voice for an hour-long set. With just enough grit to keep it human, he blends his voice perfectly with his heavily effected and skillfully played guitar. Joined by Renee Couture on drums, she gives a steady and energetic beat to all the songs, a thrill to watch on her own. Together they make a sound that defies the convention of a two-piece, with a huge, full sound that doesn’t leave you asking where the bass is.
