A vertical forest apartment project is in the planning stages for downtown Windsor.
According to Passa Associates Architects, the Goyeau Green Twin Towers is planned for the corner of Elliott and Goyeau and is designed to create an urban vertical forest “where people and nature will coexist.”
The two, 21-story residential towers will house 544 apartments with a landscaped podium for 548 cars. The buildings are planned to be covered with thousands of shrubs and plants. Each Tower will have 54 large 3-level trees with smaller vegetation on private balconies.
According to the architects, the plantings will also play a key role in moderating indoor temperatures in the summer by shading the interiors while hosting multiple species of trees and shrubs to promote biodiversity, providing an oasis for nesting birds.
The buildings will be self-sufficient using renewable energy from solar panels located on the southwest side of both of the towers. Filtered wastewater will also be utilized to sustain the buildings’ plant life.
The project is in the very early stages, with the Architects submitting pre-submission documents to the City of Windsor this week.
