Enforcement Starting This Week With Windsor’s New Red Light Cameras

A select number of the City of Windsor’s new red light cameras have been activated and enforcement will begin this week.

Mayor Drew Dilkens made the announcement during a press conference, Thursday morning.

The City says the first cameras have been installed at ten intersections throughout the city and activation and enforcement of select red light cameras begins this week

The remainder of the cameras will be in full operation by early January.

The City says the cameras capture photographic evidence of any vehicle that runs a red light. They say all recorded infractions will be reviewed by provincial offences officers in Toronto who will issue fines of $325 to owners of vehicles verified as violating local traffic laws.

“Modernizing Windsor’s traffic infrastructure to make our roads safer, better connected and easier to navigate is among Council’s top priorities,” said Mayor Drew Dilkens. “It is why we have allocated more than 40 percent of the City’s budget toward capital improvements to our roads and transportation systems.”

The City says red light cameras are installed to change driver behaviour, reduce angled collisions and increase safety.

The red light camera at University Avenue West and Crawford Avenue that was installed in November.

The cameras will also be able to ticket right-turning vehicles that do not come to a complete stop on a red light. The City says under the Highway Traffic Act, a vehicle is required to come to a complete stop when approaching a red light at a signalized intersection before proceeding.

The red light cameras are located at the following intersections:

1. Wyandotte Street East at Goyeau Street
2. University Avenue West at Crawford Avenue
3. Erie Street East at Goyeau Street
4. Howard Avenue at E.C. Row Expressway eastbound off ramp
5. Huron Church Road at Tecumseh Road West
6. Eugenie Street East at McDougall Street
7. McHugh Street at Clover Avenue
8. Wyandotte Street at Ouellette Avenue
9. Ouellette Avenue at Giles Boulevard
10. Seminole Street at Central Avenue
