8 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Monday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 8 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Monday, bringing the local total to 16,817.
New Cases
Cases increased from 16,809 on Sunday June 27th to 16,817 on Monday June 28th and 59 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.
The Health Unit says 3 cases are community acquired, 1 case is a close contact of a confirmed case, 1 case is travel related outside of North America, and 3 cases are still under investigation.
Variants of Concern
The Health Unit says 1,961 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date.
Variant case strains:
- 1,801 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7)
- 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
- 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
- 3 of the total variant cases to date has been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2)
- 1 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)
The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.
They say 7 variants of concern cases are currently active active in Windsor-Essex.
Vaccinations
Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):
- 272,044 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+89 since yesterday)
- 126,621 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-2,434 since yesterday) *
- 145,423 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+2,523 since yesterday)
- A total of 417,467 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+2,612 since yesterday)
* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses
Vaccination Percentages
- 62.11 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
- 74.1 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (18 years of age or older) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
- 33.20 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated
- 41.7 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (18 years of age or older) are fully vaccinated
Notes: Updated 18+ percentages are only provided by the Health Unit on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

Resolved Cases
The Health Unit lists 16,324 total resolved cases.
That’s an increase of 5 resolved cases since yesterday.
Deaths
There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 today and the local death toll stands at 434.
Hospitalizations
The Health Unit lists 11 hospitalizations of people from Windsor-Essex today: 4 people in acute care (increase of 2 today), and 7 people in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
Dr. Wajid Ahmed, Medical Officer of Health says Windsor-Essex’s recent increase in hospitalizations is partly due to patients at the hospital for other reasons who are tested and found to have COVID-19.
