The Windsor Essex County Health Unit has confirmed 88 new cases of COVID-19 as of Monday, bringing the local total to 1,580. They say 451 people are currently self-isolating and 864 people locally have recovered.
Cases increased from 1,492 on Sunday June 28th to 1,580 on Monday June 29th.
The Health Unit says 87 of the 88 new cases are from the agri-farm sector and Dr. Wajid Ahmed, Medical Officer of Health says an increase in cases was expected due to targeted testing on farms. Dr. Ahmed said almost all of the workers who tested positive were asymptomatic and all of the new agri-farm cases from Sunday and Monday are at one location.
Monday’s 88 new cases represent the second highest daily increase in cases within the Windsor Essex Health Unit’s area since the start of the pandemic.
There have been no additional deaths due to COVID-19 as of Monday and the local death toll stands at 68.
The Health Unit says two long-term care homes, Village of Aspen Lake and Extendicare Tecumseh, are under outbreak.
As of Monday, the Health Unit says 6 workplaces are under outbreak. These workplaces have 2 or more cases (2 workplaces in Kingsville, 4 workplaces in Leamington).
Additional Resources For The Health Unit
Dr. Ahmed says the Windsor Essex County Health Unit will be receiving additional resources to manage outbreaks at agri-farms.
He says the Health Unit escalated the need for additional support to the province and to colleagues across the province so they could “mount the appropriate response.” He says Dr. Alexander Summers, Associate Medical Officer of Health and two additional staff from the Middlesex London Health Unit will be temporarily assisting locally with managing the agri-farm outbreaks.
Stage 2 Enforcement
Dr. Ahmed says the Health Unit received some complaints about patios and businesses that had reopened over the weekend under Stage 2.
“Our tobacco, vaping and enforcement officers were out and they did a lot of education and enforcement,” he said. “And we’re hoping through this education initiative people will continue to follow the recommendations of public health and keep themselves safe and everyone else.”
