Windsor Essex Heath Unit Recommending Closure Of Restaurants And Certain Other Businesses, Places

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit is following provincial recommendations that are asking for the closure of certain types of businesses.

The Health Unit said in a release, early Monday evening, that the Chief Medical Officer of Health of Ontario is recommending the closure of the following:

• Bars and restaurants, nightclubs with the exception of take-out and delivery services
• Private schools
• Daycares
• Churches and other places of worship
• Theatres/Cinemas

In addition the Health Unit said the Chief Medical Officer of Health of Ontario has amended his previous requirement of no gatherings of 250, to no more than 50 people.

“As part of our continued response to COVID-19 and to protect the health and wellbeing of our community, risk mitigation is critical,” said Dr. Wajid Ahmed, Medical Officer of Health for Windsor-Essex.  “With St. Patrick’s Day celebrations being planned for tomorrow I am in full support of these recommendations effective 12am on March 17th, 2020.”

Dr. Ahmed also clarified that this strong recommendation applies to Royal Canadian Legion locations across Windsor and Essex County.

Dr. Ahmed warned businesses that failure to comply with the recommendations, will result in provincial orders to individual establishments under Section 22 of the Health Promotion and Protection Act.

“This is a difficult decision; however it is in the best interest of the health and wellbeing of the people of Windsor-Essex,” said Dr. Ahmed.

Michael Janisse, Manager of Communications for the Health Unit further clarified that failure to comply with the recommendations will result in orders.

“Dr. Ahmed is asking all business to comply with the recommendations of the Chief Medical Officer of Health for Ontario,” said Janisse. “Failure to do so will result in the issuance of an order to comply under Section 22 of the Health Promotion and Protection Act.”
