The County of Essex is installing a 4-way stop at the intersection of County Road 31 and County Road 14 in Leamington in hopes of reducing the number of collisions.

The new sign comes after a safety review concluded traffic volumes supported a controlled intersection and that 85%  of motorists travelling those corridors exceed the posted speed limit.

The county says that about 2,470 vehicles per day travel through the County Road 31 corridor, with 7% identified as heavy vehicle traffic, and about 1,432 vehicles per day travel through the County Road 14 corridor, with 15% identified as heavy vehicle traffic.

The most frequent type of collisions at that intersection are “right angle collisions,” where one vehicle fails to stop as required. There were seven such daylight collisions from 2015 to 2017 at that intersection.

These types of collisions can be reduced with all-way stop control, oversized Stop signs, flashing beacons and improved sight lines approaching the intersection.

The 4-Way Stop is scheduled to be installed on Tuesday, October 15th. Signs advising motorists of the change have been installed near the intersection.
