Property owners in the Town of Essex can now pay their tax bills online with the new Virtual City Hall system.
The online portal will allow property owners to check their tax account online and pay their bills from the comfort of their own home.
“The addition of online payments adds another level of convenience for property owners paying their bills,” said Jeffrey Morrison, Director of Corporate Services.
Between 2010 and 2018, the cost of those fees had nearly tripled, which prompted Council to vote in favour of no longer accepting credit card payments over the phone and implementing a $1,000 limit for in-person transactions.
The Virtual City Hall system will allow the Town to pass on the cost of processing fees to the cardholder in the form of a 1.75 per cent convenience fee. The fee will be waived for the first round of 2019 tax payments.
