University’s Abandoned Residence, Cody Hall, Slated for Demolition

The University of Windsor is losing one of its original buildings.

Cody Hall, a residence built shortly after the University was given it’s “University” status, 54 years ago, will be demolished next May after the University’s Board of Governors voted Tuesday to convert the abandoned structure into green space.

In 2009, we profiled the interior of the building as it sat unused for four years:

Built in 1961 in the “mid century modern” style, and designed by renowned Windsor architectural firm Johnson and McWhinnie, Cody Hall had fallen into severe disrepair after being discontinued from an operating dorm facility in 2005.

Cody may be famed for it’s two-story windowed atrium lounges, quite the sign of past architectural days.

Solid wood paneling adorns the walls of the atriums between floors two and three, and four and five.

The real signs of decay…

…exist down the corridors, where utilities meet the building.

Slowly circulating water into the building’s ten washrooms has resulted in a rate-over-time development of rust exiting the water lines throughout the Hall.

It’s still possible to see campus.  The Computer Centre on the left, Dillon Hall in the middle, and Essex Hall to the right.

Plenty of the old Cody Spirit still exists, perhaps solidified for years to come in its 2003 livery.

Cody’s larger stock rooms are still used for a variety of storage purposes, however the conditions inside dorm rooms are not terribly hospitable.  Many rooms have suffered major leaks, and the results of this water damage has drained to the floors below.  Here we see one of only a few well-kept rooms.

Parting gifts?

Cody Hall was twice given a decommission and over the years, University employees had suggested that Cody may be renovated to accommodate offices for professors and graduate students.

Since 2005, the first floor and parts of the basement have been heavily used by the International Students’ Centre, while floors two to five have been unoccupied, shuttered and locked to all forms of access.

The University plans to minimize disruption to students by demolishing the building after the Winter 2012 semester.
