Support workers at the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board are set to commence legal strike action on Monday, October 17th.
“This action is not directed at students, their families or the community, our picket lines will not prevent or delay students from entering the schools,” said Bruce Dickie, President of Unifor Local 2458.
Unifor Local 2458, representing 370 includes custodians, maintenance workers, secretaries, campus ministers, and information technology employees.
The strike action follows years of what the union calls failed negotiations with WECDSB.
“Wages have been frozen since 2012, which is when the last freely negotiated collective agreement expired, and the Board is also seeking to retroactively claw back prior gains,” said Deb Tveit, Assistant to the Unifor National President. “Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board has called this an ‘unfortunate situation’ but it’s one of its own making as they refused to continue negotiations.”
The board says that schools will remain open and that all transportation services will continue to operate as scheduled.
They also warn that if you take your child to school, you will most likely encounter picket lines and may experience delays. “We would like to encourage everyone to be respectful and to maintain their composure as we work towards resolution,” the board said in a letter to parents.
Extracurricular activities may continue at the discretion of the Principal, however community use of schools will be suspended.
