Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens released this update Thursday morning:

I’d like to start by thanking the residents of Windsor and the members of the media for pitching in and helping each other out last night.

I’ve heard some great stories of neighbours helping neighbours and of course our local media worked hard to help keep everyone informed.

While it hasn’t been officially confirmed by Environment Canada at this point, it certainly appears like we were hit by a tornado.

As you know from our earlier reports, there were 4 people injured, three treated at hospital, and there were NO critical injuries, which is amazing.

Full credit goes to our emergency responders and our city work crews who worked throughout the night and continue to, to minimize whatever damage they could and to keep all of us from further harm.

So here’s where we’re at this morning:

Our 311 Call Centre is open and taking service requests. If you see a situation needing city response, please call 311. But have patience, they will be busy.

The EC Row was re-opened early this morning but there are still some closures to watch for in the areas of Riberdy Road, Kautex Drive, Deziel Drive, and North Service Road.

Forestry and Public works crews continue to clean debris from roadways in and around those streets so please give them the space to do their jobs.

Power has been restored to most properties and Enwin is working on the remainder. At last check there were approximately 40 properties still without power but Enwin anticipates that number will continue to fall steadily.

There were approximately 15 homeowners displaced last night and who found accommodations with friends and family. We want those residents to know that our building inspection team will be on site to ensure the properties are safe. But no one should re-enter a damaged building of any kind without first receiving the all clear from our building inspectors.

Please call 311 if you need an inspector to come out.

Some Traffic Signals have gone down. Please continue to treat those as 4-way stops.

Transit Windsor is operating as normal today.

All gas leak issues have been safely addressed, so thank you to Union Gas for their efforts. But if you should have any concerns please call their emergency number at 1-877-969-0999.

We continue to ask residents to avoid driving around to have a look. We are still working to clean up debris and remove downed trees and power lines, so it remains imperative that crews are as unimpeded as possible.

Lastly,  I just want to say thank you one more time to everyone for looking out for each other and making this emergency have as little impact as possible. We had no warning, so there was no warning to give, but the community has done a tremendous job of coming together and no lives have been lost.
