With plans in motion to move forward with a new mega hospital, Windsor’s two existing acute-care hospitals will fade into history.
The old Hotel Dieu building, presently called the Ouellette Campus of Windsor Regional Hospital, will be demolished in around a decade from now, once patients and equipment are moved to the new mega hospital.
The Hotel Dieu name will return to the site however. Hotel Dieu Grace Heathcare, which presently operates out of the Tayfour Campus on Prince Road, will assume control of the Ouellette site once again.
Hotel Dieu Grace Heathcare will continues with its role of serving the region’s most marginalized, disenfranchised and vulnerable populations. Once the old building is demolished, the site will be redeveloped to support outpatient mental health
services. It will also serve patients in the area of chronic disease management.
Officials say the benefits to patients and the community include continued access to mental health services available in a central location. It will relieve pressure on the mega hospital’s emergency department, while creating a seamless flow through the mental health system for patients.
Met hospital however will not have a future as a medical facility once the new mega hospital is open, patients have moved over, and the hospital closes.
In order to avoid “another Grace hospital experience,” as Windsor Regional CEO David Musyj termed it, the site will be fully demolished before being turned over to the City of Windsor as part of a land swap for the old Grace Hospital site when that site becomes an urgent care centre.
Met’s fate includes full demolition, removal of all debris and foundations, and restoration to a grassy field to provide a “blank canvas” for future use.
Mayor Drew Dilkens said plans for the site could include commercial fronting Tecumseh Road, and residential to match the character of the South Walkerville neighbourhood.
The Windsor Regional Cancer Centre will also be demolished, and will be relocated to a new facility at the mega hospital.
The demolition of both hospitals and the future developments at each site will not take place until after the mega hospital is built, and is operational within ten years.
