The governments of Canada and the United States are pledging to move forward with building a new bridge between Windsor and Detroit.
Minister of Transportation Lisa Raitt says the bridge will be six lanes, will include an interchange at I-75 and is expected to create up to 15,000 jobs.
Raitt announced appointments to two authorities: the international authority, which will be responsible for overseeing the building of the bridge and the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority which will be responsible for the operation of the bridge.
Kristine Burr, Geneviève Gagnon, Michael D. Hayes, Birgit Klohs and Matt Rizik have been appointed to the oversight authority.
The government also appointed Michele Cautillo as president and CEO of the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority and named Mark McQueen as chairperson of the Board of Directors, and William Graham and Mrs. Caroline Mulroney Lapham as directors.
Raitt said she wants to make North America the most “competitive and dynamic region.”
Michigan Governor Rick Snyder said the bridge is on track and he wants shovels in the ground soon.
Snyder said they are waiting for federal funding for Michigan’s plaza and Raitt said funding problems won’t get in the way.
“We won’t let financing disagreements get in the way of timelines,” she said.
The new bridge is expected to be open by 2020.
