The new South West Detention Center has opened its doors with the first transfer of inmates to the new state-of-the-art facility. The new centre replaces the recently decommissioned Chatham Jail as well as the Windsor Jail, which will close later this year.
The center has 315-bed maximum security facility for male and female remanded and sentenced inmates, and was designed and built to meet LEED Silver certification.
It will offer many specialized programs to reduce re-offense rates, and includes eight direct supervision living units to encourage positive interaction between staff and inmates, as well as a new mental health unit.
The new facility will support more than 260 direct and in-direct jobs including correctional officers, medical staff and support workers.
“The new South West Detention Centre will enhance community safety in Windsor and south western Ontario. This secure state-of-the-art facility will provide more space for rehabilitation programs, and will deliver health care and other supports that will contribute to the successful reintegration of offenders back into the community.” said Yasir Naqvi, Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services.
