Windsor and Essex county is celebrating National Youth Art Week happening all over Canada from May 1st through the 7th.
National Youth Art Week encompasses youth from ages 13 all the way up to 30, which Michelle Le Chien, executive director of the Arts Council Windsor region, said is a really broad range of ages. While 25-year-olds may not consider themselves youth, they are within the age bracket. The idea, Le Chien explained, is to highlight activities geared towards youth in our community that revolve around art.
“Art is a big broad word,” said Le Chien. “Film, literature, visual arts, community activities, really anything happening … any type of art form.”
Le Chien and the Arts Council Windsor & Region assisted five local youth in the community who tracked down and put together an arrangement of events that emphasize youth and youth involvement. Le Chien said the ACWR is simply there to help guide the youth who put on these events, and assisted them if they needed to get in touch with organizations.
This is the ACWR’s second year promoting National Youth Art Week. While last year was small, this year is much larger and many organizations actually created activities and events geared towards or were organized by youth.
“I think it’s awesome,” said Le Chien. “It’s a really great way for people of any age to really look at what they can do in a community. That’s what’s kind of wonderful about Windsor, you can be of any age and you can actually create an event or an activity and really just make it happen. So for me this is just a way to make things happen in our community.”
Le Chien said Nation Youth Arts Week and the events that are happening to highlight youth give everyone the chance to explore what happens in the city all year long. Many of the organizations involved do these types of activities and events throughout the year and this week is all about combining different art forms together and emphasizing the youth involved.
There are 13 events highlighted on the Arts Council Windsor Region website page. For more information about the events and how you can attend, visit http://acwr.net/explore-the-arts/nyaw/.
