Windsor Police say their new Nurse Police Team handled 127 supports for service, provided on-site clinical assessments, and referrals to appropriate community resources during its first five weeks of service.
The Nurse and Police Team pairs nursing professionals from Windsor Regional Hospital with frontline police officers for more effectively responding to non-emergency, substance use-related incidents.
The goal is to deliver immediate care and connect individuals in need with the appropriate support services while steering them away from the criminal justice system and hospital emergency rooms.
The teams operate on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays between 11:00am and 11:00pm.
They reported the following stats:
- 12 substance-related wounds treated
- 14 fentanyl test strips distributed
- 18 Naloxone dosages administered
- 116 referrals to community resources
- 64 E.R. visits averted
