Windsor Regional Hospital has received accreditation from Accreditation Canada’s Stroke Distinction program with ‘Distinction in Stroke Services’ for 2022 to 2026.

Stroke Distinction is an award of Accreditation Canada. It recognizes health organizations that demonstrate clinical excellence and an outstanding commitment to leadership in stroke care. Windsor Regional Hospital applied for the distinction award, along with eight other stroke centres of the Southwestern Ontario Stroke Network.

Last November, the Accreditation Canada Stroke Distinction surveyor was onsite at WRH and visited the Emergency Room, CT, ICU, Urgent TIA Clinic and the Acute Stroke Unit.

“This is great news for Windsor Regional Hospital and the residents of Windsor-Essex,” says Denise St. Louis, Manager, District Stroke Centre Windsor-Essex. “This achievement is a result of the commitment from leadership and the dedicated, talented frontline staff that provide excellent care every day. The team is looking forward to ongoing opportunities to build on the work that has been done to further strengthen the program.”

Windsor Regional Hospitals District Stroke Centre was recognized for:

  • Investing in comprehensive acute stroke services and making strategic program decisions to ensure responsiveness to demand and capacity as well as gaps and barriers to care.
  • A collaborative stroke team with the appropriate skill set, knowledge and attitude to provide quality acute stroke services where current best practice guidelines are followed.
  • Strong partnerships with EMS to ensure a rapid stroke response that continues with standardized in hospital protocols.
  • Urgent TIA Clinic that has minimal wait time and internal and external partnerships to ensure appropriate stroke prevention and follow-up.
  • Closely knit team of hospital and community providers that collaboratively help clients, families and caregivers by ensuring appropriate resources and support as they transition from hospital to home.
