The Town of Tecumseh will no longer perform Civil Marriage Services effective December 31st, 2022.
The Town says that a service review completed earlier this year identified marriage ceremonies as a discretionary service with a limited financial return to the Town. Civil Marriage ceremonies are not regarded as a core service of the department.
In 2022, 21 marriage ceremonies were booked, the highest number of bookings for this service since it launched in 2018. This increase could be from the lack of services provided in the past two years due to the pandemic and the restrictions on gatherings which made couples defer their wedding plans. In 2018 and 2019, this service averaged ten bookings annually.
An administration report also said that the fee for civil marriages is $75.00, and this fee does not cover the cost of staff time to make arrangements for the service.
The Town will continue to issue marriage licenses.
