Children’s Grief Awareness Day takes place on Thursday, November 17th.
The day was first started in 2008 by the Highmark Caring Place, A Centre for Grieving Children, Adolescents and Their Families. It has since been recognized around the world on the third Thursday in November.
The Day brings attention to children’s grief and that support can make all the difference in their lives. Loss and grief affect children in many profound ways and stays with them their whole lives. Their mission is to help grieving children feel less alone and more supported through changing the culture surrounding children and grief.
The Canadian Mental Health Association, Windsor-Essex County Branch’s Griefworks Therapists provide grief and trauma therapy through activity-based interventions for children and adolescents up to 18 years of age, who have experienced the death of a loved one.
In recognition of Children’s Grief Awareness Day, they will host an evening of connection, expression, and healing. A variety of activity centres will be available, including memory buckets, cookie decorating, yoga, story time, games and refreshments.
