While Halloween is less than a month away, a local business is sweetening things up a bit early.

Located at 2857 Howard Avenue, Paper Heroes – Comic Book Lounge & Collectables is bringing comic books and sugary treats together with a new section. Geared towards kids and adults alike, Candy Heroes has created a team-up that provides something for everyone.

A long time in the making, the idea came from a simple place.

“I actually started to think about bringing something different into the store a couple of years ago but then COVID hit,” said owner Scott St. Amour. “We always do a lot of camping in Ontario and we would stop in these little beach side towns and it would never fail that there would be a small little candy shop. The kids loved it, I loved it and I thought that would be cool to introduce into the store.”

Opening to the public on August 30th, it’s been a success ever since. With a fresh dose of nostalgia, the section focuses on retro and unique items. This also includes candy from as far away as the United Kingdom, Mexico and Australia.

While the selection is already impressing many, St. Amour is looking to make it even bigger.

“People have been sharing the posts on Facebook and coming in to see what’s available,” he said. “You hear a lot of ‘ I remember those’ or ‘I used to eat those all the time,’ so it’s great to see what people respond to. I am trying to bring in more international items, but it seems like with everything right now there are supply chain issues. As things open up I hope to expand that selection.”

Impacting more than inventory, COVID-19 had the store in survival mode for over a year. As restrictions loosened and a new five year lease was signed however, St. Amour felt now was the right time to unveil his vision

Resulting in increased traffic, it’s a gamble that’s paid off.

“New visitors to the store for candy has far exceeded my expectations,” he said. “People who have never been to the store before are coming in for the first time to check out the selection, see what’s available and then take a look at  the rest of the store as well. My regular customers also seem to like the addition with a good majority of them picking up a sugary snack with their weekly books.”

As far as what people are enjoying the most though?

“Hands down the most popular items have been the Root Beer Mike & Ikes and the Cotton Candy Mike & Ikes,” said the owner. “Yes, there are more on the way!”
