Health Unit COVID-19 Cases & Outbreaks Update For Wednesday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 25 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Wednesday.

New & Total Cases

The Health Unit says 7 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 5 cases are community acquired, 2 cases are travel related, and the acquisition sources of 11 cases are still under investigation.

Total overall cases increased from 20,423 on Tuesday October 26th to 20,448 on Wednesday October 27th.

They say 174 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex (increase of 4 since yesterday).

Variants of Concern

  • 1,839 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha variant (B.1.1.7)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta variant (B.1.351)
  • 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma variant (P.1)
  • 2,830 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta variant (B.1.617.2)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain. The numbers listed are not necessarily correlated to today’s new cases due to the delay.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 324,064 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+219 since yesterday)
    • 16,803 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-195 since yesterday)
    • 307,261 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+414 since yesterday)
    • 4,936 people have received a 3rd dose/booster shot of a vaccine (+34 since yesterday)
  • A total of 636,261 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+667 since yesterday)

Vaccination Percentages

  • 73.9 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of < 0.1 per cent since yesterday)
    • 85.4 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)
  • 70.1 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)
    • 81.0 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)

Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

The Health Unit lists 19,810 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 20 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

The Health Unit announced one additional death from COVID-19 today bringing the local death to 464. They say a man in his 70s from the community passed away.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 12 hospitalizations today: 7 people in acute care (increase of 1), and 5 people in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
