Health Unit COVID-19 Cases & Outbreaks Update For Tuesday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 11 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Tuesday.

New & Total Cases

The Health Unit says 2 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 2 cases are community acquired, 1 case is outbreak related, and the acquisition sources of 6 cases are still under investigation.

Total overall cases increased from 19,842 on Monday October 4th to 19,853 on Tuesday October 5th.

They say 238 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex (decrease of 40 since yesterday).

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 4,394 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 8 since yesterday).

Variant case strains:

  • 1,834 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha variant (B.1.1.7)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta variant (B.1.351)
  • 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma variant (P.1)
  • 2,387 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 8 since yesterday)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain. The numbers listed are not necessarily correlated to today’s new cases due to the delay.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 317,194 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+442 since yesterday)
    • 295,905 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+717 since yesterday)
    • 4,046 people have received a 3rd dose/booster shot of a vaccine (+231 since yesterday)
  • A total of 617,145 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+1,390 since yesterday)

Vaccination Percentages

  • 72.4 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)
    • 83.6 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)
  • 67.5 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.2 per cent since yesterday)
    • 78.0 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.2 per cent since yesterday)

Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

The Health Unit lists 19,159 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 51 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 and the local death toll stands at 456.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 11 hospitalizations today: 3 people in acute care (decrease of 6), and 8 people in the ICU (increase of 2) with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
