Health Unit COVID-19 Cases Update From The Weekend

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 173 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County from over the weekend. The Health Unit no longer reports case counts and statistics on weekends and now provides a weekend summary.

New & Total Cases

Of the 173 new cases: 47 cases were reported on September 11th, 78 cases were reported on September 12th, and 48 cases were reported on September 13th.

The Health Unit says 64 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 37 cases are community acquired, 3 cases are outbreak related, 3 cases are travel related, and the acquisition sources of 66 cases are still under investigation.

Total overall cases increased from 18,852 on Friday September 10th to 19,025 on Monday September 13th.

They say 515 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex (decrease of 28 since Friday).

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 3,695 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 85 since Friday).

Variant case strains:

  • 1,834 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
  • 1,607 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 68 since Friday)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain. The numbers listed are not necessarily correlated to today’s new cases due to the delay.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 307,975 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+1,406 since Friday)
    • 26,626 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-209 since Friday) *
    • 281,349 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+1,615 since Friday)
  • A total of 589,324 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+3,021 since Friday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 70.31 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.32 per cent since Friday)
    • 81.2 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.4 per cent since Friday)
  • 64.23 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.37 per cent since Friday)
    • 74.1 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.4 per cent since Friday)

Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

The Health Unit lists 18,064 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 199 resolved cases since Friday.

Deaths

The Health Unit announced two additional deaths from COVID-19 over the weekend bringing the local death toll to 446. The Health Unit has not disclosed details on the deaths.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 20 hospitalizations today: 16 people in acute care (increase of 2), and 4 people in the ICU (increase of 1) with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
