Health Unit COVID-19 Cases & Outbreaks Update For Wednesday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 50 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Wednesday.

New & Total Cases

The Health Unit says 22 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 8 cases are community acquired, 2 cases are travel related, and the acquisition sources of 18 cases are still under investigation.

Total overall cases increased from 19,358 on Tuesday September 21st to 19,408 on Wednesday September 22nd.

They say 347 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex (increase of 14 since yesterday).

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 4,047 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 90 since yesterday).

Variant case strains:

  • 1,834 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha variant (B.1.1.7)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta variant (B.1.351)
  • 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma variant (P.1)
  • 2,021 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 60 since yesterday)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain. The numbers listed are not necessarily correlated to today’s new cases due to the delay.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 311,783 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+466 since yesterday)
    • 25,215 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-175 since yesterday) *
    • 286,568 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+641 since yesterday)
  • A total of 601,509 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+1,140 since yesterday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 71.18 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.11 per cent since yesterday)
    • 82.1 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)
  • 65.42 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.15 per cent since yesterday)
    • 75.5 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)

Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

Resolved Cases

The Health Unit lists 18,610 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 35 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

The Health Unit announced one additional death from COVID-19 today bringing the local death toll to 451. They say a woman in her 80’s from the community passed away.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 22 hospitalizations today: 13 people in acute care (decrease of 2), and 9 people in the ICU (increase of 4) with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
