Health Unit COVID-19 Cases & Outbreaks Update For Friday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 33 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Friday.
New & Total Cases
The Health Unit says 14 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 11 cases are community acquired, 1 case is outbreak related, and the acquisition sources of 7 cases are still under investigation.
Total overall cases increased from 19,440 on Thursday September 23rd to 19,473 on Friday September 24th.
They say 302 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex (decrease of 18 since yesterday).
Variants of Concern
The Health Unit says 4,113 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 24 since yesterday).
Variant case strains:
- 1,834 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha variant (B.1.1.7)
- 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta variant (B.1.351)
- 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma variant (P.1)
- 2,109 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 48 since yesterday)
- 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa variant (B.1.617.1)
The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain. The numbers listed are not necessarily correlated to today’s new cases due to the delay.
Vaccinations
Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):
- 312,960 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+694 since yesterday)
- 24,704 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-204 since yesterday) *
- 288,256 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+898 since yesterday)
- 3,344 people have received a 3rd dose/booster shot of a vaccine (+126 since yesterday)
- A total of 604,560 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+1,718 since yesterday)
* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses
Vaccination Percentages
- 71.45 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.16 per cent since yesterday)
- 82.5 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.2 per cent since yesterday)
- 65.81 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.21 per cent since yesterday)
- 76.0 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.3 per cent since yesterday)
Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

The Health Unit lists 18,720 total resolved cases.
That’s an increase of 51 resolved cases since yesterday.
Deaths
There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 and the local death toll stands at 451.
Hospitalizations
The Health Unit lists 19 hospitalizations today: 9 people in acute care (decrease of 7), and 10 people in the ICU (increase of 1) with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
