The University of Windsor has lit Turtle Island Walk Orange to commemorate Orange Shirt Day on, the inaugural National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada.

A Community Commemoration is planned for Thursday to mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The event is intended to honour the children of the past by focusing on the children of the present, to prepare for the children of the future.

The event starts with opening ceremonies at 11am east of Bert Weeks Memorial Gardens, followed by a walk along the Riverfront Trail beginning at 1pm. Closing ceremonies take place at 6pm at Assumption Park.

Masks and social distancing are in effect for the event, which has been designed by Legal Assistance of Windsor, St. Clair College Indigenous Student Services, and additional community partners.

“National Day for Truth and Reconciliation provides an opportunity to honour First Nations, Inuit and Métis Survivors and their families and communities while ensuring that public commemoration of their history and the legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process. The City of Windsor stands with Indigenous Peoples and encourages everyone to spend time building an understanding of the true and often painful history of Indigenous Peoples in Canada, which is a part of our national story. This week, City Hall is illuminated orange in recognition of this important day. May we learn, and may we never forget,” said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens.
