Health Unit COVID-19 Cases Update From The Long Weekend

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 24 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County from over the long weekend. The Health Unit no longer reports case counts and statistics on weekends and now provides a weekend summary at the start of the week.

New & Total Cases

Of the 24 cases reported, 3 were reported on July 31st, 5 were reported on August 1st, 5 were reported on August 2nd, and 11 were reported on August 3rd.

The Health Unit says 3 cases are community acquired, 5 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 1 case is travel related, and the sources of 15 cases are still being investigated.

Total overall cases increased from 16,883 on Friday July 30th to 16,907 on Tuesday August 3rd, and 40 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 2,015 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 13).

Variant case strains:

  • 1,823 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7) (increase of 1)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
  • 29 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 12)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.

They say 11 variants of concern cases are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 288,678 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+1,285 since Friday)
    • 34,682 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-2,357 since Friday) *
    • 253,996 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+3,642 since Friday)
  • A total of 542,674 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+4,927 since Friday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 65.90 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
    • 76.1 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
  • 57.98 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated
    • 66.9 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated

Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

There are three vaccination programs at this time:

    • Walk-in appointments are available at all mass vaccination sites for first doses, pending vaccine availability.

Resolved Cases

The Health Unit lists 16,432 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 9 resolved cases since Friday.

Deaths

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 and the local death toll stands at 435.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 1 hospitalization of a person from Windsor-Essex today: 0 people in acute care, and 1 person in the ICU (increase of 1) with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
