56 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Wednesday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 56 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Wednesday.

New & Total Cases

The Health Unit says 14 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 9 cases are community acquired, 1 case is outbreak related, and the acquisition sources of 32 cases are still under investigation.

Total overall cases increased from 17,324 on Tuesday August 17th to 17,380 on Wednesday August 18th.

They say 316 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex (increase of 29).

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 2,260 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 48).

Variant case strains:

  • 1,834 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
  • 260 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 46)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.

They say 106 variants of concern cases are currently active in Windsor-Essex (increase of 22).

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 294,667 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+471 since yesterday)
    • 28,814 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-286 since yesterday) *
    • 265,853 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+757 since yesterday)
  • A total of 560,520 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+1,228 since yesterday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 67.27 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
    • 77.7 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
  • 60.69 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated
    • 70.1 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated

Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

The Health Unit lists 16,627 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 27 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 today and the local death toll stands at 437.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 7 hospitalizations today: 6 people in acute care, and 1 person in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
