44 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Tuesday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 44 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Tuesday.

New & Total Cases

The Health Unit says 10 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 6 cases are community acquired, 2 cases are travel related, and the acquisition sources of 26 cases are still under investigation.

Total overall cases increased from 17,280 on Monday August 16th to 17,324 on Tuesday August 17th.

They say 287 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex (increase of 27).

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 2,212 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date.

Variant case strains:

  • 1,834 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
  • 214 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.

They say 84 variants of concern cases are currently active in Windsor-Essex (decrease of 8).

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 294,196 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+479 since yesterday)
    • 29,100 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-201 since yesterday) *
    • 265,096 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+680 since yesterday)
  • A total of 559,292 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+1,159 since yesterday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 67.16 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
    • 77.5 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
  • 60.52 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated
    • 69.9 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated

Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

The Health Unit lists 16,600 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 17 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 today and the local death toll stands at 437.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 7 hospitalizations today: 6 people in acute care (increase of 1), and 1 person in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
