29 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Thursday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 29 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Thursday.

New & Total Cases

The Health Unit says 10 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 9 cases are community acquired, and the acquisition sources of 10 cases are still under investigation.

Total overall cases increased from 17,077 on Wednesday August 11th to 17,106 on Thursday August 12th.

They say 165 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex (increase of 8).

The Health Unit does not provide a breakdown of whether cases are in people who are vaccinated or not, however Dr. Wajid Ahmed, Medical Officer of Health said last Friday that approximately 75 to 80 per cent of local cases are in people who are unvaccinated.

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 2,140 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 59).

Variant case strains:

• 1,834 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7) (increase of 2)
• 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
• 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
• 142 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 57)
• 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.

They say 78 variants of concern cases are currently active in Windsor-Essex (increase of 38).

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

• 292,453 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+1,065 since yesterday)
  • 30,547 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-384 since yesterday) *
  • 261,906 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+1,449 since yesterday)
• A total of 554,359 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+2,514 since yesterday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

• 66.76 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
  • 77.1 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
• 59.79 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated
  • 69.0 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated
