20 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Thursday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 20 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Thursday. Thursday’s daily increase is the largest daily increase in cases since June 7th.

New & Total Cases

The Health Unit says 5 cases are community acquired, 8 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 2 cases are travel related, and the acquisition sources of 5 cases are still under investigation

Total overall cases increased from 16,918 on Wednesday August 4th to 16,938 on Thursday August 5th, and 65 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 2,023 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 5).

Variant case strains:

  • 1,825 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7) (increase of 2)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
  • 34 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 5)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.

They say 14 variants of concern cases are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 289,455 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+442 since yesterday)
    • 33,576 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-643 since yesterday) *
    • 255,879 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+1,085 since yesterday)
  • A total of 545,334 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+1,527 since yesterday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 66.08 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
    • 76.3 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
  • 58.41 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated
    • 67.4 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated

Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

Resolved Cases

The Health Unit lists 16,438 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 3 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 and the local death toll stands at 435.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 2 hospitalizations of people from Windsor-Essex today: 1 person in acute care, and 1 person in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
