1 New Death, 69 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Friday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 69 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Friday.

New & Total Cases

The Health Unit says 22 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 9 cases are community acquired, 2 cases are outbreak related, 1 case is travel related, and the acquisition sources of 35 cases are still under investigation.

Total overall cases increased from 17,431 on Thursday August 19th to 17,500 on Friday August 20th.

They say 353 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex (increase of 29).

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 2,260 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date.

Variant case strains:

  • 1,834 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
  • 260 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain. The numbers listed are not necessarily correlated to today’s new cases due to the delay.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 295,970 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+550 since yesterday)
    • 28,558 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-197 since yesterday) *
    • 267,412 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+747 since yesterday)
  • A total of 563,382 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+1,297 since yesterday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 67.57 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
    • 78.0 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
  • 61.05 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated
    • 70.5 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated

Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

The Health Unit lists 16,709 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 39 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

The Health Unit announced one additional death from COVID-19 today bringing the local death toll to 438. They say a woman in her 50s from the community passed away.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 7 hospitalizations today: 7 people in acute care, and 0 people in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
