1 New Death, 20 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Friday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 20 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Friday.

New & Total Cases

The Health Unit says 7 cases are community acquired, 6 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 1 case is travel related, and the acquisition sources of 6 cases are still under investigation.

Total overall cases increased from 16,938 on Thursday August 5th to 16,958 on Friday August 6th.

They say 79 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex (increase of 14).

Dr. Wajid Ahmed, Medical Officer of Health says 75 to 80 per cent of local cases are in people who are unvaccinated.

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 2,047 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 24).

Variant case strains:

  • 1,832 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7) (increase of 7)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
  • 51 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 17)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.

They say 32 variants of concern cases are currently active in Windsor-Essex (increase of 18).

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 289,947 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+492 since yesterday)
    • 33,201 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-375 since yesterday) *
    • 256,746 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+867 since yesterday)
  • A total of 546,693 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+1,359 since yesterday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 66.19 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
    • 76.4 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
  • 58.61 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated
    • 67.6 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated

Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

There are three vaccination programs at this time:

    • Walk-in appointments are available at all mass vaccination sites for first doses, pending vaccine availability.

Resolved Cases

The Health Unit lists 16,443 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 5 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

The Health Unit announced one additional death from COVID-19 today bringing the local death toll to 436. They say a woman in her 70’s from the community passed away. Dr. Ahmed says the woman was unvaccinated.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 2 hospitalizations of people from Windsor-Essex today: 2 people in acute care (increase of 1), and 1 person in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
