6 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Friday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 6 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Friday, bringing the local total to 16,838.

New Cases

Cases increased from 16,832 on Thursday July 8th to 16,838 on Friday July 9th, and 26 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

The Health Unit says 1 case is travel related, 1 case is community acquired, 1 case is a close contact of a confirmed case, and 3 cases are still under investigation.

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 1,983 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 5).

Variant case strains:

  • 1,814 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7) (increase of 1)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
  • 7 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 3)
  • 1 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.

They say 12 variants of concern cases are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 277,311 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+618 since yesterday)
    • 80,093 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-4,853 since yesterday) *
    • 197,218 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+5,471 since yesterday)
  • A total of 474,529 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+6,089 since yesterday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 63.31 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
    • 75.1 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (adults) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
  • 45.02 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated
    • 55.6 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (adults) are fully vaccinated

Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

Resolved Cases

The Health Unit lists 16,377 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 3 resolved case since yesterday.

Deaths

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 and the local death toll stands at 435.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 4 hospitalizations of people from Windsor-Essex today: 2 people in acute care (increase of 1), and 2 people in the ICU (increase of 1) with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
