2 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Thursday / Friday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 2 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County from  Thursday/Friday, bringing the local total to 16,832. The Health Unit did not report case counts and statistics on Thursday due to the holiday.

New Cases

Cases increased from 16,830 on Wednesday June 30th to 16,832 on Friday July 2nd and 54 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

The Health Unit says the acquisition sources of both cases are still under investigation.

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 1,968 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 6).

Variant case strains:

  • 1,808 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7) (increase of 6)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
  • 3 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2)
  • 1 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.

They say 9 variants of concern cases are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 273,923 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+828 since Wednesday)
    • 107,710 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-8,754 since Wednesday) *
    • 166,213 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+9,582 since Wednesday)
  • A total of 440,136 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+10,410 since Wednesday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 62.53 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
  • 37.94 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated

Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

Getting A Vaccine (1st Dose)

There are three vaccination programs at this time:

  • Mass Vaccination Clinics
    • Those eligible include:
      • Individuals 12+ (if 12 or older at time of vaccination).
      • First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Populations

Getting A Vaccine (2nd Dose)

  • Mass Vaccination Clinics:

      • Anyone who received their first dose of Pfizer or Moderna on or before June 9th
      • Anyone who received their first dose of AstraZeneca on or before May 12th (at least 8 weeks from first dose)
      • Youth (12-17 years) who received a first dose on or before May 12th (at least 8 weeks from first dose)

Resolved Cases

The Health Unit lists 16,344 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 9 resolved cases since Wednesday.

Deaths

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 today and the local death toll stands at 434. The Health Unit says the total decreased by one death due to a routine data clean up.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 15 hospitalizations of people from Windsor-Essex today: 10 people in acute care, and 5 people in the ICU (decrease of 1) with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
