The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 2 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Friday.

New & Total Cases

The Health Unit says two new cases are reported for Friday but due to a data cleanup, the net change to the overall local total is zero. Their method for reducing the overall local total due to data cleanups involves reducing the current day’s recorded new case count, even if there are new cases.

Due to the data cleanup, total overall cases remained the same at 16,846 from Wednesday July 14th to Thursday July 15th, and 21 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

Of the two new cases, the Health Unit says 1 case is community acquired, and the acquisition source of 1 case is still under investigation.

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 1,988 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date.

Variant case strains:

  • 1,815 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
  • 10 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.

They say 6 variants of concern cases are currently active in Windsor-Essex.
