5 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Wednesday, All Outbreaks Ended

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 5 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Wednesday, bringing the local total to 16,790.

New Cases

Cases increased from 16,785 on Tuesday June 22nd to 16,790 on Wednesday June 23rd and 54 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

The Health Unit says 2 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 1 case is community acquired, 1 case is travel related outside of North America, and the acquisition source of 1 case is still being investigated by their contact tracing staff.

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 1,944 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 2 today).

Variant case totals:

  • 1,795 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7) (increase of 2 today)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 15 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 1 today)
  • 1 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.

They say 14 variants of concern cases are currently active active in Windsor-Essex.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 270,030 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+865 since yesterday)
    • 148,452 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-4,239 since yesterday) *
    • 121,578 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+5,104 since yesterday)
  • A total of 391,608 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+5,969 since yesterday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 61.65 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
    • 73.7 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (18 years of age or older) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
  • 27.75 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated
    • 34.9 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (18 years of age or older) are fully vaccinated

Notes: Updated 18+ percentages are only provided by the Health Unit on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

Resolved Cases

The Health Unit lists 16,302 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 5 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 today and the local death toll stands at 434.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 7 hospitalizations of people from Windsor-Essex today: 2 people in acute care, and 5 people in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.

Dr. Wajid Ahmed, Medical Officer of Health says for the first time in more than eight months Windsor Essex has zero COVID-19 outbreaks. He called it a “significant milestone,” noting that in January Windsor Essex had 53 active outbreaks.
