14 New Cases (Net Of 2 Due To Data Cleanup) Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Thursday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 14 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Thursday, bringing the local total to 16,592 (a net increase of only 2 cases to the total due to a data cleanup).

New Cases

Health Unit CEO Theresa Marentette says 14 new cases are reported for Thursday but the net increase is only 2 cases due to a data cleanup completed on Wednesday. The Health Unit says 12 duplicate cases were removed from their system’s total and that’s represented in the new cases number Thursday.

Cases increased from 16,590 on Wednesday June 2nd to 16,592 on Thursday June 3rd and 165 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

Of the 14 new cases, the Health Unit says 2 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 5 cases are community acquired, 1 case is outbreak related, and the acquisition sources of 6 cases are still being investigated by the Health Unit’s contact tracing staff.

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 1,818 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (an increase of 16 identified since yesterday).

Variant case totals:

  • 1,681 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7) (increase of 16 today)
  • 6 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1) (increase of 1 today)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 1 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)
  • 1 of the total variant cases to date has been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.

They say 91 variants of concern cases are currently active active in Windsor-Essex.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 253,255 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+2,398 since yesterday)
    • 220,896 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-472 since yesterday) *
    • 32,359 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+2,870 since yesterday)
  • A total of 285,614 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+5,268 since yesterday)

* the Health Unit says the reduction in this number is due to data cleanup

Vaccination Percentages

  • 71.7 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (18 years of age or older) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
  • 57.82 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
  • 7.38 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are completely vaccinated

The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

There are three vaccination programs at this time:

  • Mass Vaccination Clinics (Pfizer or Moderna)
    • Those eligible include:
      • People 12 years of age and older.
      • Essential workers who cannot work from home that are 16 years and older, born in 2005 or earlier.

Getting A Vaccine (2nd Dose)

  • Pfizer/Moderna:
    • Those eligible include:
      • People 80 years of age and older.

Resolved Cases

The Health Unit lists 16,000 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 34 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 today and the local death toll stands at 427.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 13 hospitalizations of people from Windsor-Essex today: 8 people in acute care (increase of 3 today), and 5 people in the ICU (decrease of 1 today) with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
