13 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Friday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 13 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Friday, bringing the local total to 16,708.

New Cases

Cases increased from 16,695 on Thursday June 10th to 16,708 on Friday June 11th and 131 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

The Health Unit says 4 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 5 cases are community acquired, 3 cases are outbreak related, and the acquisition source of 1 case is still being investigated by the Health Unit’s contact tracing staff.

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 1,901 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 7 today)

Variant case totals:

  • 1,746 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7) (increase of 6 today)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 12 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
  • 1 of the total variant cases to date has been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2)
  • 1 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.

They say 60 variants of concern cases are currently active active in Windsor-Essex.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 263,566 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+555 since yesterday)
    • 198,358 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-4,962 since yesterday) *
    • 65,208 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+5,517 since yesterday)
  • A total of 328,774 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+6,072 since yesterday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 60.17 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
    • 72.2 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (18 years of age or older) have received at least one dose of a vaccine *
  • 14.88 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated
    • 18.7 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (18 years of age or older) are fully vaccinated *

The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

Getting A Vaccine (1st Dose)

There are three vaccination programs at this time:

  • Mass Vaccination Clinics (Pfizer or Moderna)
    • Those eligible include:
      • People 12 years of age and older.
      • First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Populations

    • Or you can call 226-773-2200 (but the Health Unit says the call centre is only for assisting people who can’t use the website and the call centre has the same access to appointments as what’s shown on the website)

    • None at this time.

Getting A Vaccine (2nd Dose)

  • Pfizer/Moderna:
    • Those eligible include:
      • People 70 years of age and older.
      • Anyone who received their first dose of Pfizer or Moderna on or before April 18th, 2021

  • AstraZeneca:
    • People can now receive their second doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Resolved Cases

The Health Unit lists 16,144 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 14 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 today and the local death toll stands at 433.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 12 hospitalizations of people from Windsor-Essex today: 10 people in acute care (decrease of 2 today), and 2 people in the ICU (decrease of 1) with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
