1 New Death, 17 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Saturday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 17 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Saturday, bringing the local total to 16,625.

New Cases

Cases increased from 16,608 on Friday June 4th to 16,625 on Saturday June 5th and 163 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

The Health Unit says 8 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 3 cases are community acquired, and the acquisition sources of 6 cases are still being investigated by the Health Unit’s contact tracing staff.

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 1,845 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (an increase of 14 identified since yesterday).

Variant case totals:

  • 1,705 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7) (increase of 12 today)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 9 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1) (increase of 2 today)
  • 1 of the total variant cases to date has been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2)
  • 1 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.

They say 91 variants of concern cases are currently active active in Windsor-Essex.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 258,357 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+2,278 since yesterday)
    • 218,820 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-1,375 since yesterday) *
    • 39,537 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+3,653 since yesterday)
  • A total of 297,894 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+5,931 since yesterday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 58.98 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
  • 9.02 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are completely vaccinated

The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

Getting A Vaccine (1st Dose)

There are three vaccination programs at this time:

  • Mass Vaccination Clinics (Pfizer or Moderna)
    • Those eligible include:
      • People 12 years of age and older.
      • First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Populations

Getting A Vaccine (2nd Dose)

  • Pfizer/Moderna:
    • Those eligible include:
      • People 70 years of age and older.
      • Anyone who received their first dose of Pfizer or Moderna before March 31st, 2021

  • AstraZeneca:
    • People can now receive their second doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Resolved Cases

The Health Unit lists 16,034 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 15 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

The Health Unit announced one additional death from COVID-19 today bringing the local death toll to 428. They say a man in his 70s from the community passed away.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 18 hospitalizations of people from Windsor-Essex today: 10 people in acute care (increase of 2 today), and 8 people in the ICU (increase of 3 today) with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
