1 New Death, 16 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Saturday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 16 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Saturday, bringing the local total to 16,773.

New Cases

Cases increased from 16,757 on Friday June 18th to 16,773 on Saturday June 19th and 62 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

The Health Unit says 7 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 6 cases are community acquired, and the acquisition sources of 3 cases are still being investigated by their contact tracing staff.

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 1,933 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 1 today).

Variant case totals:

  • 1,777 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7) (increase of 1 today)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 12 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
  • 1 of the total variant cases to date has been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2)
  • 1 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.

They say 18 variants of concern cases are currently active active in Windsor-Essex.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 267,942 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+616 since yesterday)
    • 160,354 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-5,260 since yesterday) *
    • 107,588 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+5,876 since yesterday)
  • A total of 375,530 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+6,492 since yesterday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 61.17 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
  • 24.56 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated

Notes: Updated 18+ percentages are only provided by the Health Unit on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

There are three vaccination programs at this time:

  • Mass Vaccination Clinics (Pfizer or Moderna)
    • Those eligible include:
      • People 12 years of age and older.
      • First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Populations

Getting A Vaccine (2nd Dose)

  • Pfizer/Moderna:
    • Those eligible include:
      • People 70 years of age and older.
      • Anyone who received their first dose of Pfizer or Moderna on or before May 9th, 2021

  • AstraZeneca:
    • People can now receive their second doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Resolved Cases

The Health Unit lists 16,277 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 9 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

The Health Unit announced one additional death from COVID-19 today bringing the local death toll to 434. They say a woman in her 60s from the community passed away.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 9 hospitalizations of people from Windsor-Essex today: 7 people in acute care (increase of 2), and 2 people in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
