1 New Death, 10 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Wednesday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 10 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Wednesday, bringing the local total to 16,830.

New Cases

Cases increased from 16,820 on Tuesday June 29th to 16,830 on Wednesday June 30th and 60 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

The Health Unit says 4 cases are community acquired, 1 case is travel related to the U.S., and 5 cases are still under investigation.

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 1,962 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 1 today).

Variant case strains:

  • 1,802 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7) (increase of 1 today)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
  • 3 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2)
  • 1 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.

They say 5 variants of concern cases are currently active active in Windsor-Essex.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 273,095 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+582 since yesterday)
    • 116,464 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-6,047 since yesterday) *
    • 156,631 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+6,629 since yesterday)
  • A total of 429,726 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+7,211 since yesterday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 62.35 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
    • 74.4 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (18 years of age or older) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
  • 35.76 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated
    • Nearly 45 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (18 years of age or older) are fully vaccinated

Notes: Updated 18+ percentages are only provided by the Health Unit on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

Resolved Cases

The Health Unit lists 16,335 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 8 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

The Health Unit announced one additional death from COVID-19 today bringing the local death toll to 435. They say a woman in her 70s from the community passed away.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 16 hospitalizations of people from Windsor-Essex today: 10 people in acute care (increase of 3 today), and 6 people in the ICU (decrease of 1) with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
