40 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Thursday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 40 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Thursday, bringing the local total to 15,676.

New Cases

Cases increased from 15,636 on Wednesday May 5th to 15,676 on Thursday May 6th and 367 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

The Health Unit says 13 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 14 cases are community acquired, 1 case is travel-related to the U.S., and the acquisition sources of 12 cases are still being investigated by the Health Unit’s contact tracing staff.

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 1,052 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (an increase of 31 identified since yesterday).

Variant case totals:

  • 960 of the total variant cases to date have been the U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7) (increase of 30 identified since yesterday)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date have been the South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 3 of the total variant cases to date have been the Brazilian Variant (P.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 165,627 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+3,935 since yesterday)
    • 151,552 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (+3,883 since yesterday)
    • 14,075 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+52 since yesterday)
  • A total of 179,702 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+3,987 since yesterday)

The Health Unit says Windsor-Essex’s total population in 2021 is approximately 438,001. As of today, 37.81 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents have received at least one dose of a vaccine.

How To Get A Vaccine

There are three vaccination programs at this time:

  • Mass Vaccination Clinics (Pfizer or Moderna)
    • Those eligible include:
      • Adults aged 50 and older in 2021 living anywhere in Windsor-Essex
      • Adults aged 18 and older in 2021 living in “hot spot” postal code regions: N8X, N8Y, N9A, N9B, N9C, N8H, or N9Y
      • Pregnant individuals
      • People with the “highest risk”, and “high risk” health conditions
      • Adults aged 40 and older in 2021 with “at risk” health conditions
      • Healthcare workers in the “highest priority”, “very high priority” or “high priority” groups
      • Licenced childcare workers
      • Essential Workers Who Cannot Work from Home (Group 1)

  • Pharmacy Vaccinations (Moderna)
    • 14 pharmacies located in hot spot postal codes will soon offer Moderna as part of a pilot project.
    • Eligibility: adults aged 18 and older in 2021 living in “hot spot” postal code regions: N8X, N8Y, N9A, N9B, N9C, N8H, or N9Y

Resolved Cases

The Health Unit lists 14,895 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 57 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 today and the local death toll stands at 414.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 11 hospitalizations of people from Windsor-Essex today: 6 people in acute care (increase of 1), and 5 people in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
