57 New Cases Of COVID-19, 1 New Death In Windsor Essex On Thursday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 57 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Thursday, bringing the local total to 15,022.
New Cases
Cases increased from 14,965 on Wednesday April 21st to 15,022 on Thursday April 22nd and 478 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.
The Health Unit says 22 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 10 cases are community acquired, 1 case is outbreak related, 1 case is travel-related outside of North America, and the acquisition sources of 23 cases are still being investigated by the Health Unit’s nursing staff.
The Health Unit says 635 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (an increase of 45 identified since yesterday). They say 562 of the total variant cases to date have been the U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7), and 2 of the total variant cases to date have been the South African Variant (B.1.351).
Vaccinations
Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):
- 130,897 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+3,841 since yesterday)
- 117,389 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (+3,787 since yesterday)
- 13,508 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+54 since yesterday)
- A total of 144,405 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+3,895 since yesterday)
The Health Unit says Windsor-Essex’s total population in 2021 is approximately 438,001. As of today, 29.88 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents have received at least one dose of a vaccine.
How To Get A Vaccine
There are two vaccination programs at this time:
- Mass Vaccination Clinics (Pfizer or Moderna)
- Those eligible include:
- Adults aged 50 and older living in “hot spot” postal code regions: N8X, N8Y, N9A, N9B, N9C, N8H, or N9Y
- Adults aged 60 and older living anywhere in Windsor-Essex
- Healthcare workers in the highest priority, very high priority or high priority groups
- People with the highest risk, and high risk health conditions

- Or you can call 226-773-2200 (but the Health Unit says the call centre is only for assisting people who can’t use the website and the call centre has the same access to appointments as what’s shown on the website)
- Those eligible include:

- Adults aged 40 and older can make an appointment at a participating pharmacy.

Resolved Cases
The Health Unit lists 14,132 total resolved cases.
That’s an increase of 64 resolved cases since yesterday.
Deaths
The Health Unit announced one additional death from COVID-19 today bringing the local death toll to 412. They say a woman in her 80s from a retirement home passed away. Dr. Wajid Ahmed, Medical Officer of Health says the woman had contracted COVID-19 a few months ago and died as a result of complications from COVID-19.
Hospitalizations
The Health Unit lists 20 hospitalizations today: 17 people in acute care, and 3 people in the ICU (increase of 1) with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
