49 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Wednesday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 49 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Wednesday, bringing the local total to 15,341.

New Cases

Cases increased from 15,292 on Tuesday April 27th to 15,341 on Wednesday April 28th and 453 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

The Health Unit says 23 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 6 cases are community acquired, 2 cases are outbreak related, and the acquisition sources of 18 cases are still being investigated by the Health Unit’s nursing staff.

The Health Unit says 812 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (an increase of 6 identified since yesterday). They say 732 of the total variant cases to date have been the U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7), and 2 of the total variant cases to date have been the South African Variant (B.1.351).

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 144,746 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+3,202 since yesterday)
    • 131,050 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (+3,145 since yesterday)
    • 13,696 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+57 since yesterday)
  • A total of 158,442 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+3,259 since yesterday)

The Health Unit says Windsor-Essex’s total population in 2021 is approximately 438,001. As of today, 33.04 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents have received at least one dose of a vaccine.

How To Get A Vaccine

There are two vaccination programs at this time:

  • Mass Vaccination Clinics (Pfizer or Moderna)
    • Those eligible include:
      • Adults aged 60 and older in 2021 living anywhere in Windsor-Essex
      • Adults aged 40 and older in 2021 living in “hot spot” postal code regions: N8X, N8Y, N9A, N9B, N9C, N8H, or N9Y
      • Pregnant individuals
      • People with the “highest risk”, and “high risk” health conditions
      • Adults aged 40 and older in 2021 with “at risk” health conditions
      • Healthcare workers in the “highest priority”, “very high priority” or “high priority” groups
      • Licenced childcare workers

Resolved Cases

The Health Unit lists 14,475 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 49 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 today and the local death toll stands at 414.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 18 hospitalizations of people from Windsor-Essex today: 13 people in acute care (decrease of 2 today), and 5 people in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.

  • 1 outbreak at a retail workplace in Windsor
