42 New Cases Of COVID-19, 1 New Death In Windsor Essex On Saturday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 42 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Saturday, bringing the local total to 15,126.

New Cases

Cases increased from 15,084 on Friday April 23rd to 15,126 on Saturday April 24th and 471 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

The Health Unit says 18 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 9 cases are community acquired, and the acquisition sources of 15 cases are still being investigated by the Health Unit’s nursing staff.

The Health Unit says 710 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (an increase of 25 identified since yesterday). They say 634 of the total variant cases to date have been the U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7), and 2 of the total variant cases to date have been the South African Variant (B.1.351).

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 137,896 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+3,472 since yesterday)
    • 124,317 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (+3,445 since yesterday)
    • 13,579 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+27 since yesterday)
  • A total of 151,475 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+3,499 since yesterday)

The Health Unit says Windsor-Essex’s total population in 2021 is approximately 438,001. As of today, 31.48 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents have received at least one dose of a vaccine.

How To Get A Vaccine

There are two vaccination programs at this time:

  • Mass Vaccination Clinics (Pfizer or Moderna)
    • Those eligible include:
      • Adults aged 50 and older living in “hot spot” postal code regions: N8X, N8Y, N9A, N9B, N9C, N8H, or N9Y
      • Adults aged 60 and older living anywhere in Windsor-Essex
      • Healthcare workers in the highest priority, very high priority or high priority groups
      • People with the highest risk, and high risk health conditions
      • Pregnant individuals

    • Or you can call 226-773-2200 (but the Health Unit says the call centre is only for assisting people who can’t use the website and the call centre has the same access to appointments as what’s shown on the website)

Resolved Cases

The Health Unit lists 14,242 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 55 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

The Health Unit announced one additional death from COVID-19 today bringing the local death toll to 413. They say a woman in her 80s from the community passed away.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 14 hospitalizations today: 10 people in acute care (decrease of 1), and 4 people in the ICU (increase of 1) with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.

  • 1 outbreak at a manufacturing workplace in Tecumseh (positive for the U.K. Variant B.1.1.7)
  • 1 outbreak at a repair and maintenance workplace in Windsor (new outbreak)
  • 1 outbreak at a retail workplace in Windsor (new outbreak)

  • No current community outbreaks.
