The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit’s surveillance and monitoring system is reporting a significant increase in drug-related overdoses between March 9th through March 15th, 2021.
According to officials there were twenty-seven overdose-related emergency department visits during this time period with seven including opioids specifically.
Five of these opioid overdoses involved fentanyl.
“Based on our comparisons to previous years for this week, these numbers are significantly higher and warrant a community alert,” said a release from the Health Unit. “Partners involved in the WECOSS including WECHU, Windsor Regional Hospital, Essex Windsor-EMS, Erie Shores Healthcare, and Police Services continue to monitor this increase and are working to understand more about these reported cases.”
