The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 34 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Thursday, bringing the local total to 12,899.

Today’s New Cases

Cases increased from 12,865 on Wednesday February 24th to 12,899 on Thursday February 25th and 260 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

The Health Unit says 5 cases are outbreak-related, 12 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 11 cases are community-acquired, and 6 cases are still being investigated by the Health Unit’s nursing staff.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today:

  • 2,306 people have received only their first dose of the vaccine (+411 since yesterday)
  • 11,511 people have received both doses of the vaccine (full series) (+10 since yesterday)
  • A total of 25,328 doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+431 since yesterday)

Vaccine Rollout To 80+ Age Group

The Health Unit says they will begin vaccinating the more than 20,000 local seniors 80 years of age or older starting March 1st.

Health Unit CEO Theresa Marentette says the rollout will include targeted, appointment-based clinics at the WFCU Centre starting March 1st, and the Nature Fresh Farms Recreation Centre in Leamington starting March 8th.

She says the vaccinations will be organized using a pre-registration system and will not operate under a first-come first-serve model. Marentette says registrants will be randomly selected based on available space for upcoming clinics. Walk-ins will not be welcome.

Dr. Wajid Ahmed, Medical Officer of Health says the clinic aims to vaccinate around 200 people aged 80 and older each day and that vaccine supply is the issue that is preventing more daily vaccinations.

“The only limitation or limiting factor right now for us is supply of the vaccine,” he said. “If the province wants to give us more vaccine tomorrow, our system is ready to handle that. We can ramp it up to as much vaccine as possible, up to 600, 800 doses a day if need be.”

The Health Unit’s news means vaccinations in this age group are starting at least two weeks earlier than the provincial plan.

They say both deaths are from the community. A man in his 50s and a woman in her 80s passed away.
