4 New Deaths, 216 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Thursday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 216 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Thursday, bringing the local total to 10,494.

Today’s New Cases

Cases increased from 10,278 on Wednesday January 13th to 10,494 on Thursday January 14th and 2,802 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

The Health Unit says 31 cases are outbreak-related, 10 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 6 cases are community acquired, and 169 cases are still being investigated by the Health Unit’s nursing staff.

Recoveries

The Health Unit lists 7,451 total recoveries.

That’s an increase of 222 recoveries today.

Deaths

There have been 4 new deaths from COVID-19 today bringing the local death toll to 241.

The Health Unit says:

  • All 4 are from long-term care and retirement homes
    • A man in his 70’s
    • A man and a woman in their 80’s
    • A woman in her 90’s

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 111 hospitalizations today: 93 people in acute care (12 more today), and 18 people in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.

Dr. Wajid Ahmed, Medical Officer of Health says the recent school outbreaks are from when schools were open but the delay in declaring the outbreaks are the result of the delay in contact tracing and case investigation. He says these are not active outbreaks, but the Health Unit is required to report the outbreaks and notify the community once an investigation is complete.
